by JESSICA HOLLAN Assistant editor Broadway, known for bright lights and big voices, veered into an alternate universe on Tuesday, April 4. The night was full of bright lights and big voices, but not the flashy show tunes most musical theatre fans have come to enjoy. No. Flipping her hair to lip-sync her opening number, drag queen Deija D lit up the Marion Center, hosting SPECTRUM’s fifth annual Drag Night. “This year’s Drag Night was the best way to close out the year and my presidency,” said SPECTRUM president Nicholas Ditter. “My eboard came together and put on an event that we were all proud of.”
SPECTRUM member Sami Kramer agreed, saying, “We are very thankful to everyone who came out and saw the show, and we are especially grateful to all the amazing performers. We are so lucky to have the lovely Dieja D come out and host the event for us.” Dieja D, who has been the host of Drag Night since its creation, stated that TU’s event is her favorite for obvious reasons. With her energetic attitude and constant banter, Dieja D offers a top notch performance. Audience applause chooses the winners. This year, the best group performance was awarded to Ekaterina Hauff and Justin Kopronica; the best male drag was awarded to Ali Schirmer; and the best female drag went to third-time champion Will Dixon. “It’s going to be hard to top next year,” said Ditter. “But we have always attempted to improve each year.”
