![]() by ANDRE DREW and ALEXANDRIA COLEMAN Co-editor and staff writer The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite has been trending in protest of the Academy Awards’ lack of diversity this year. On Jan. 18, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Spike Lee criticized the nominations on their social media and called for a boycott of the awards. This is not the first time this issue has been brought up about the Academy Awards. According to CNN, “the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has faced years of criticism that its 7,000-plus members who vote on the Oscars are mostly older, male, white and out of touch with today's moviegoers.” The academy awards did not start the problem. The problem lies within Hollywood in general. Spike Lee posted on Instagram, “As I See It, The Academy Awards Is Not Where the "Real" Battle Is. It's In The Executive Office Of The Hollywood Studios And TV And Cable Networks. This Is Where The Gate Keepers Decide What Gets Made And What Gets Jettisoned To "Turnaround" Or Scrap Heap.”
