Races, races everywhere and culture dripping from the rafters. Though most students who have decided to attend Tiffin University might think that our student population is small, they don’t realize the amazing chance they have been given.
With the mix of Chinese, Saudi Arabian, African, European and American culture, TU truly gives its students an opportunity to experience cultures from all over the world. The vast diversity of people brings to light the stark difference that our students have. However, students must learn how to live and co-exist with cultures that may clash with their own.
“It's a culture shift. All of us are trying to figure this out,” said Dean Herdlick. He agreed that it is a challenge for students to get use to such a diverse environment.
Undergraduate student Emma Wegner said, “I came from a town of mostly white people. Coming here was a bit of a shock, but it helped that two of my best friends were of different races.”
“I've never experienced so many cultures,” said Andre Drew, another student.
TU most definitely provides more than just an excellent academic experience, but also a cultural rich one as well.
Perhaps this was best put by Dean Herdlick, who said, “It is a melting pot here.”
As a school with such a diverse student base, it would be important to make sure that all culture is respected and given the proper consideration. However, Dean Herdlick sadly informed, “Unfortunately, there is still discrimination.”
Discrimination would most definitely be a main concern on a campus with such a large population of international students. It is up to us as students to make the most of our highly mixed campus. We can use it to gain insights into cultures vastly different from our own, or we can create a hostile environment that is neither accepting nor understanding of these cultures.
Which will you choose?
